Keith HARING was born in 1958 and died young in 1990. He was an activistic artist whose work responded to street culture of the 1980s by expressing against social, political or financial oppression. His imagery is based on comic's caracters in simple composition and has become a recognized visual language.

Keith Haring’s style is recognizable, his set of characters and distinctive emblematic signs are unique. He used numerous formats and resorted to the media of his era going to the extent to marketing derived products in his famous Pop Shop since 1985. The messages and the political ideas that he conveyed do not only form a part of his legacy, but have considerably influenced artists and the society. His drawings created in the underground, his paintings, his drawings and sculptures, conveyed a message of social justice, of individual liberty and change. Being a Pop Art icon, a subversive and activist artist, Keith Haring multiplied his commitments his whole life long. By using the street and public spaces to address the as many people as possible, he took a stance against racism and all sorts of injustices or violence, particularly the Apartheid in South Africa, the nuclear threat, the environmental destruction, homophobia and the AIDS epidemic (of which he died in 1990 and also created a charitable foundation in favour of the treatment of the disease).
